Nov 5th Featured Writer and Writing Group

We are delighted to welcome Pauline Prior-Pitt as our Featured Writer and North Uist as our Featured Writing Group. Pauline, who lives on North Uist and writes below about its lively writing scene, performs every year at the Word Power Book Fringe event in August, and is a well-known and highly popular reader of her sharply observed and poignant poems.

Pauline’s most recent poetry collection is called Meeting the Stone. She
has published seven collections of poetry and four poetry pamphlets.
North Uist Sea Poems won the Callum Macdonald Award.
She has appeared in many Literature Festivals, She is one of Scotland’s Live Literature Poets, a former Poet Partner for the Scottish Poetry Library, and the founder of “Last Thursdays” poetry evenings and the “Uist Writing Workshop”.

Pauline writes….

All our events take place at the award winning Taigh Chearsabagh Arts Centre and Museum in Lochmaddy. We have a thriving monthly poetry evening called “Last Thursdays”, which has been running for the past 16 years. There is usually a theme and people read their own or favourite published poems. Most of the evenings are Open Mic sessions but we also invite visiting poets from the Live Literature Scotland Scheme. Jackie Kay will be here in November!

If you are a poet visiting North Uist on holiday and would like to read at one of our poetry evenings, please get in touch and we will give you a guest spot.

The Uist Writing Workshop has 14 members at the moment and we meet on the first Saturday of the month. It is a very friendly supportive group. We usually have a writing exercise to start the session and after coffee we have a helpful critical session for people who have brought work to share. Everyone brings enough copies so that we can all contribute to the discussion.

Each year we produce a small pamphlet of poetry and prose which we launch in the summer during “Art on the Map”.
Printed on small cards, our poems can also be found on the cafe tables at Taigh Chearsabhagh.
